Chris Loder MP welcomes investment to tackle sewage dumping after Environment Bill vote

Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, has welcomed a group of investments for a significant number of water treatment and sewage outflow sites in West Dorset to tackle the dumping of raw sewage following votes for action on the issue with the Environment Bill votes in late 2021.

Mr Loder’s votes helped secure new legal powers to slash the number of sewage discharges, forcing water companies to invest in the area to futureproof the local sewage network and stop dividends being paid out to water companies that pollute the environment.

Among the areas where outflows are set to be revamped include Charmouth, Martinstown, Chideock, Dorchester and Sydling St Nicholas.

Mr Loder said; “many of these areas have been hit by flooding or sewage discharges before, so I am very pleased to see action being taken through the legislation I voted through to sort this out”

This comes on top of the news that one of the first legal targets of this Bill, 100% electronic monitoring of every outflow in England by 2024, was met in December last year, as well as Wessex Water’s £800,000 investment in sewage treatment infrastructure at West Bexington off Chesil Beach last year.

Mr Loder continued: “considering the long time for so many laws to progress through Parliament and take effect, it is great to see something for which I have campaigned so hard deliver clear and tangible results for the West Dorset environment within the relatively short space of time I have been elected as your MP. I shall continue working hard through the Clean Rivers of West Dorset taskforce to keep the pressure on for further improvement.”
