Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, has advanced his long-standing campaign to implement clear and consistent food labelling. As a result of Mr Loder’s campaign, a consultation will be launched on proposals make food labelling clearer, such as highlighting when imported products do not meet UK welfare standards and help to ensure food produced to the highest standards is consistently labelled.
Mr Loder said: “It’s clear to me that West Dorset’s consumers want to know what they are buying, but too often products aren’t clearly labelled to differentiate good from poor quality. This consultation on clearer food labelling will tackle the unfairness created by misleading labelling and work to protect farmers and consumers. In 2021, I tabled an amendment to address this very issue, along with my proposal to introduce food miles on packaging. I’d still like to see this on labelling, as well as transparency about products of non-stun slaughter.”
The local MP continued: “In addition, I’ll be working closely with the Environment Secretary and online retails to identity ways to better support online customers to understand the origin of their food products at the point of purchase, including the option of a Buy British Button.”
