Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset, attended a small ceremony on Tuesday 22nd August for the repatriation of a number of items belonging to Alan Turing. 17 stolen possessions belonging to the pioneering mathematician and codebreaker, including his OBE and PhD certificate, were returned to the School since they were removed in 1984. Turing attended the School between 1926 to 1931.
At the event, Mr Loder was joined by Headteacher of Sherborne School, Dominic Luckett; Rachel Hassall, the School’s archivist; and Special Agent Greg Wertch from the United States’ Department of Homeland Security. Speaking about the event, Mr Loder said:
“Today is a special day in the long history of Sherborne School. After nearly forty years, a number of personal possessions belonging to Alan Turing have finally been returned. It was Turing’s family back in 1965 that had donated the items to the School and I am glad to see that they are now back in their proper place.”
