  • Speeches in Parliament

In the House of Commons of Thursday 13th May I endorsed the sentiment and policies put forward by the Government in the recent Queen's Speech. The Gracious speech from Her Majesty the Queen which opened this session of Parliament on Tuesday, truly set out the opportunities that our Government is pursuing for the future of this nation. I particularly commended the Government on two Bills, the Environment Bill and the Animals Abroad Bill.

The village of Chideock, between Bridport and Lyme Regis in West Dorsey, has the highest levels of nitrogen dioxide in the entire country from traffic on the A35 and the pollution is more than double the Government limit. This issue is not new, but urgent action is required, and progress can be made with the new powers the Environment Bill will provide.

Furthermore, in the Second Reading of my Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act, I outlined to parliament my continuing mission for Animal Welfare in this country. In this speech I stated that I am delighted that the Government has again, responded to my petition for improved animal welfare as reflected in the proposed Animals Abroad Bill. I want us to ban the disgraceful practice of live animal exports and I see that the government’s intended Bill will give us this opportunity. But I also noted that I want to see an end to non-stun slaughter of animals, and I proposed to the Government that we could find an opportunity within the legislative agenda here, to stop this horrifying practice that causes unnecessary suffering of our animals.

I believe that this Queen's Speech has laid a strong foundation for the Parliamentary session ahead, and look forward to working with the Government to improve the lives of and provide opportunities for individuals across West Dorset and Great Britain.
