West Dorset MP Chris Loder has supported the official ‘reopening’ of a revamped Weymouth Station on Friday 21st April after a long campaign alongside South Dorset’s MP Richard Drax to overhaul the formerly dilapidated canopy and tidy up the surrounding area.
Mr Loder held a summit at the station with Mr Drax in April 2021 to call for action on the decaying railway terminus. The actions of the two neighbouring MPs resulted in a substantial programme of works undertaken by Network Rail at the station, including a landscaped planting scheme, new lighting, and CCTV to deter antisocial behaviour on top of the refurbished canopy. Mr Loder said;
“I have been delighted to support my colleague Richard Drax, who has campaigned for this for over a decade. I have always lobbied hard for our Weymouth and Dorchester to London Waterloo line – it is an essential service for many of those in West Dorset travelling up to London for work or to see family and a vital artery for tourism in West and South Dorset in particular. It is imperative that our stations reflect this prestige and I am delighted see that after the persistent efforts of both Richard Drax and myself, we now have a vital local station that will benefit so many in Dorset”
