West Dorset MP Chris Loder was welcomed by the Lyme Regis boatbuilding Academy last week to observe the vital work they do in empowering people to learn the historic art of boatbuilding and discuss ways to further support the charity.
The Academy works with a small number of students every year on its most widely renowned course - the 40 week boat building course. Currently the class of March 2022 consists of 7 students from a wide range of backgrounds. The Academy also runs a greater number of regular, shorter courses in furniture making and restoration. It also offers bursaries of up to 50% for disadvantaged students – a scheme which Mr Loder “hopes very much will continue”.
Chris said; “It was great to visit and support the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy and to see the craftsmanship in action. This is a unique and iconic part of Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast more widely which recently celebrated its 25 year anniversary last year. Long may this, and the vital work they do, continue”
